Designing for the Internet of Things

Summary
As designers and researchers, the tools and techniques we employ have remained largely unchanged over the past few decades. 

Currently, the promise of the Internet of Things is forcing us to broaden our focus as we apply those tools.  Even the most entrenched interaction, visual, or product designer will be required to think in different terms as many common tasks and interactions that we take for granted become multi-modal. 

As IoT becomes more and more of a reality, we also have to take stock of the fact that we are not only designing for the interaction between a user and a product, but also product to product interaction and interactions that span modalities, devices, and different contexts of use.  We will have to examine the concept of the expert user as more and more of these interactions become seamless, ubiquitous and invisible.
